Fly Fishing From a Drift Boat

By Ryan O Kelly Fly fishing from a drift boat can be a tremendous advantage over wade fishing. It allows you to cover a lot more water and get amazingly long drifts. I row a drift boat about a 180 days a year and have worked hard to perfect my craft. When fly fishing from a drift boat it is important to remember it is different from wade fishing. I watch a countless number of drift boats go by trying to fish like they would while wading. Here are some simple tips to help you catch more fish from a drift boat. 1. Row the boat at the same speed as your flies. Most of the time your flies and the boat will be moving in different currents. That means the boat and the flies will be traveling at different speeds. The rower needs to focus on one of the flies and slow down or speed up accordingly. It is the job of the fisherman to mend his/her line as needed to keep a proper drift. If two people are fishing, fish out the same side of the boat at a similar distance. It is impossible for the rower to row two different drifts at the same time. 2. Fish nymphs perpendicular to the boat with the boat pointed downstream. If you fish nymphs in front of the boat you will miss most of your hits. In fact, the majority of your hits won’t even move your indicator. You’ll never know if they even happened. Cast your line straight towards shore and mend accordingly. You want your flies to trail back on a 45 degree angle from your indicator. This will increase the number of hookups. 3. Don’t overweight your nymph rigs. Weight your rigs enough to get the flies to the bottom without hanging up. It should take the flies five to ten seconds to reach the feeding zone. I can usually float 200 to 500 feet without hanging up. If you never hang up you probably need to add a little weight. Adding too much weight will not allow the flies to drift naturally with the current. Rather your indicator will pull your flies through the natural currents. The undercurrents are not always the same as the surface current. You want your flies to drift naturally. 4. Fish Dry flies downstream from the boat. An easy way to do this is turn the boat sideways and cast straight downstream. This can be difficult if the wind is blowing. If the boat is pointed downstream, cast as much downstream as possible and still reach your desired target. A 45 degree angle downstream is a good place to start. Both fishermen should fish parallel to one another. When fishing the bank avoid the temptation to cast straight across. Hit the bank as far downstream as possible. A reach cast works best. 5. Things not to do. Don’t fish behind the boat. Especially with dry flies. You want the fish to see your fly first, not last. Don’t anchor in a run or on a flat. It is rude to block the natural flow of traffic. Don’t pull anchor and start fishing in front of someone right behind you. Don’t switch sides of the river in front of other boats. Don’t row over other peoples flies. Don’t criticize other boats for their mistakes. 6.Things to do. Have fun and catch fish. Give others lots of space. Avoid contention on the river. Moving them from a place of uncertainty and indecision to a yes — Ill take it! state of mind, means using the full complement of sales tools and techniques. But once your prospect has made the decision to buy, the pressure is off. Theyre relaxed and relieved. That’s the time to sell more products and services. It’s your golden opportunity to increase revenues, cash flow, and profits with very little additional effort. How? Simply by increasing the dollar amount of the initial purchase — by offering discounts or other extra bonuses on quantity buys. What you want to do is encourage the buyer to spend more money through inducements, extras, discounts, and special deals. Make it enticing and you’ll sell more goods. Some customers are happy to buy consumable products by the caseload — rather than single packages — when they could save some money by doing so. Just look at the success of stores like Costco and Sams Club. Many of their products are bundled into quantities that are larger than those a typical family would buy. Simply making this option available means they sell more goods. Often the price is just too attractive to pass by. People end up spending more cash — just to save money. Once you have a customer in your store, browsing through your catalogue, or visiting your web site, your task is to maximize the value of their visit. In other words, sell more goods and boost your profits. Make it easy for visitors to buy. Make it easy for them to spend more money than they planned to. Obviously, you want them to do so happily and without regret. After all, you only want satisfied customers. In fact, you should make it an objective of your business to develop life-long customers. The profit potential of repeat purchases and referrals are simply unmatched. The more repeat customers you have, the less youll need to spend on attracting new customers. You’ll sell more products at far less effort and expense. Whatever quantity deals you offer should always be in your customer’s best interest. Its not a matter of unloading excess inventory; it’s about offering superb value. Do so and you’ll automatically sell more widgets. Increasing the value of a purchase can be as simple as providing support materials or accessories that are natural and convenient additions to whatever the customer is buying. For example… an electrical supply store could offer booklets that guide homeowners to safely carry out minor repairs and installations themselves. A sportswear retailer could offer socks and underwear in addition to their full line of outerwear, as extra accessories at the point of purchase. Self-development author, Anthony Robbins offered a video at a substantial discount with every package of Personal Power audiotapes or CDs sold. The video offer was only introduced after the initial sale had been made. This proved to be an effective technique for increasing the average cash value of a purchase. Offer additional value at the “moment of truth” and you’ll sell more now. Scaling down the price-per-piece according to the amount purchased also helps to stimulate additional volume purchases. This works well with products that have large profit margins and where customers can easily justify getting more than one, as is the case with consumable products and gift items. Give buyers an extra advantage on quantity purchases and you will sell more. One local entrepreneur sells single bottle wine stands at local fairs and shopping mall kiosks. This product is nothing more than a single piece of wood cut on a sharp angle with one hole drilled through, on the same angle. The weight of the bottle balances the board. Its a novel idea one that captures peoples attention quickly. This savvy marketer sells one wine stand for $5 — or two for $6.50. He sells far more packages of two, than he does single units. Why? Its such a great deal, few passers-by can resist. An extra buck and a half is mere pocket change and theres always someone the buyer could give it to. Its too difficult to ignore something like this. Think of supermarket pricing. While shopping for groceries yesterday, the price of bundled green onions were clearly marked at — 3 for 99 cents. There was no price listed for just one bunch. Guess what? Most people that were buying green onions yesterday, took 3 bunches. Perhaps it was the perception that this special price was only available on quantity purchases. People often assume that theyll get a better price (per piece) on three, than just one. Heres how the thinking goes. I might be charged 50 cents for one bunch. Buying 3 gives me each for just 33 cents. Thats better value, so Ill take 3 bunches. Another way to encourage customers to spend more is by offering an attractive discount on a second, or third similar product. This could work well for businesses whose customers would like to buy more than one. A good example would be a ladies shoe store. This kind of business could significantly increase sales by offering a second pair of shoes at 15% — 20% off. What could you do today to increase your revenue, cash flow, and profits? Is Your Fat Burning Exercise Routine Keeping You Fat & Unhealthy?

By Rob Poulos The majority of exercisers today still rely on long duration moderate paced aerobic exercise as their primary routine to burn fat fast. But recent studies have shown that this is a big, I mean big mistake. In fact, you could say that the whole aerobics explosion of a few decades past was one of the biggest mistakes in the health and fitness industry. Why? There are several reasons, but Ill focus on the two main issues here. When you exercise at a moderate pace for extended periods of time (as in the typically recommended percent of your target heart rate), your body is burning fat during the exercise. While this may sound good, its actually bad news. This sends a signal to your body to keep a certain amount of stored fat available for your next workout. Youre essentially telling it that it needs fat available to burn, because youll be doing this exercise again. So while we may be burning some calories during this exercise, after the exercise is over, our body begins storing up some fat for the next workout. Obviously not what were looking for in terms of maximum ability to burn fat fast. The other big concern with moderately paced aerobic exercise performed several times per week is that it trains your body (heart, lungs, muscles, etc.) to become efficient. Again, this may sound good, but what is actually happening is bad for long term health. You are working only within your existing aerobic limits, without improving your aerobic capacity. This is important because your aerobic capacity is what determines how your body responds in times of physical, emotional, and mental stress. If you reduce your capacity for work, as you do in this type of exercise, youre reducing your long term health, no to mention a poor chance of burning fat. The good news is, you can reverse these effects by instead focusing your workouts on high intensity resistance training, with workouts that last 15-20 minutes on average, and can only be performed 2-3 times per week. These workouts will burn carbohydrates instead of fat during the workout, and will cause your body to use its fat stores to replenish the burned carbs over the next 24 hours, after the workout is done! This type of work will also increase your reserve capacity and thus your ability to handle all types of stress, leading to lasting health and fitness…and 24/7 fat burning. Nice! But the exercise must be performed correctly to be effective, and that means using sufficient intensity, and keeping your rest periods between exercises and sets down to 60 seconds or less. I came across a website that decided to create a marketing message that focused on fear based selling and over the top lies. To emphasize the fear based factor, the website was illustrated with pictures of spider bite ‘victims’ that had huge holes in their skin from where the small spider bite supposedly turned into a flesh eating monster. One photograph caption went way over the top by stating that the victim of a horrific spider bite on the leg resulted in the victim having their leg amputated. The business owners then went on to state that if the victim would have bought their product, this never would have happened.And if you purchase their product it will not happen to you. This business chose to base their marketing on deceit and lies to sell their product. Even worse, they valued profit more than people. They chose to paint a horrific picture with their marketing message in an attempt to scare up customers. What picture does your marketing message paint for prospects? By Scot McKay Every day it’s a constant barrage of noise. All of us, apparently, have to make some big changes-and now—or else you’ll never get a date again. All for 3 easy payments of $49.95. Oh, come on. Are we really this gullible? Lately I’ve been paying attention to media, especially advertising, and realizing more than ever how we are getting played. Think about it. Virtually everything communicated to us in the commercial media is designed to sell a product, further a cause, etc. Extraordinarily often, this plays upon our feelings of worthiness to attract “hotties”. Right? One of my favorite recent commercials is the one where the guy and girl make eye contact while on stopped streetcars headed in opposite directions. Quickly the guy springs up to get off his ride and hopefully catch the other one so he can meet the woman. Unsuccessfulhe is dejected when both streetcars leave, only to find that the woman had done the same thing (!) There they are standing across from each other, and it’s presumably on’. What a great commercial, and what a picture perfect example of a “romantic moment”. Except for one curious thingit’s for a pair of guys pants. How in the world did the pants help him in the all-important quest to attract the girl? He was looking out a streetcar window! Where this conversation gets more personal is when it involves things we are perceived to have to change in order to get someone to be attracted to us at all. For guys, the easy target has historically been baldness, although nowadays penis size seems to be gaining momentum (that doesn’t sound quite rightbut you know what I mean). The latter is another whole topic, so let’s talk about what it’s like for bald guys. Bald guys have been generally trained by media to be horrified of going bald. Bald guys are remembered as ridiculed in sitcoms and in movies. Bald guys are told no women are interested in a guy without hair, and that they should spend all the money it takes to change it. Now, I happen to have plenty of hair on my head, so I’m an unbiased opinion here. Judging from informal conversations with numerous women, and from what I’ve seen on online profiles, I think far fewer women are turned off by a receding hairline-or even flat-out baldness-than these commercials would like for us to believe. We may indirectly notice how long lashes positively affect a woman’s attractiveness, but really–I assure you–we aren’t obsessing over her eyelashes. Better example: fashion. Most of us guys, again not a general statement but far more than you are led to believe, really think a woman looks as great in a sweatshirt, sweatpants and ankle sox as she did in that Carolina Herrera gown last night. Really. Believe it. In fact, the “girl next door” thing in general rules with many, many guys. Don’t we all appreciate someone real? This goes for plastic surgery, also. Informal surveys of my male friends show that we really don’t all go for a large breast size. It’s true. Believe that also. I can count on both hands the number of guys I know who appreciate women with surgically altered bust lines. How many times have you seen someone who has had a facelift, and immediately thought he or she would have been better off leaving it alone? And the clincher? News flash: Despite everything you’ve heard, seen, and have had played before your eyes(are you sitting down for this?)A LOT of guys don’t prefer skinny women. In fact, some of us out here don’t even have a direct preference when it comes to the subject matter of this paragraph or the preceding one. Now, extremism is one thing, and if someone is affected as such s/he should get that handled for health and lifestyle reasons. But for the most part, who a woman is-overall-is going to affect the level of attraction for a guy. And this thought process appears to apply to both men and women.
