Marketing With Business Cards

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Joe Love Many businesses today overlook the importance of business cards as a very powerful marketing weapon. Their business cards contain just a name, company, address and phone number. But smart and savvy marketers know that an effective business card should also contain the company theme and its prime benefits. Business cards are fabulous marketing tools, so make them stand out. For example you could have embossing, full-color, or artwork on your business card. You could also have a fold-over business card where the front has your name, address, and phone number, and when it opens up, it becomes a mini-brochure. People appreciate having the complete information right on one small item along with the convenience of a business card. The important thing to remember is that your business card must convey your identity and the main benefit your product or service delivers. If you have more than one business, then have a separate business card for each one. Use the back of your business card to list a special offer, such as a special discount or something free. Business cards are only reminders, if your imagination limits you to that usage. But they also can be very powerful selling tools and marketing vehicles that set you apart from the competition. Dont worry about the cost, if your business cards can net you a nice profit. Stay with the standard business card size so that yours fits in a card storage file, wallet, or Rolodex. And use a type face that is clear and easy to read. Be sure to include your business name, your name, your address, phone number, and your email address. If you have a home-based business and don’t want to use your home address, then put your post office box on your card. Although you can have a printer design your card, it is well worth the cost to have a good art director or graphic designer design your cards. Especially if your cards are going to be used at trade shows, in mailings or more than for just randomly handing them out. The feel of good paper stock or the raised lettering of your copy can turn a prospect into a customer. The prime points to remember in creating a business card are: * Your business card is a marketing opportunity; so use it. * Be unique without calling attention to your cleverness. * Give more information than the usual name, address, and phone number. * Use the back of your business card for a discount or special offer. * Invest in a great-looking card if a lot of prospects will see it. * Dont be skimpy with passing out your cards. Be generous. You should always give people two business cards, one for their rolodex and one to pass on to someone else. When you ask people for their business cards, always ask for 3 or 4. Then you can staple two cards in your rolodex. One under the person’s name or business name and the other under what they do. For example, you could have sections in your rolodex for writers, designers, programmers, etc. You can then pass the additonal cards on to the appropriate people in your network. In the communication age of today savvy internet marketers know that there is a whole world of offline businesses. They know that potential customers still read newspapers and magazines. Potential customers still listen to the radio and watch televison. Potential customers still have rolodexes filled with buiness cards. Many of my clients tell me that their business card is really a mini-brochure, and is one of their single most important marketing tools. I can think of very few marketing tools that are so low in price yet seen by such a high ratio of great prospects. The bottom line is that you should never leave your home or office without a pocket, wallet, or purse full of business cards. Copyright(c) 2004 by Joe Love and JLM & Associates, Inc. Ways To Ace A Grad School Presentation

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Catherine Zandueta Acing a grad school presentation is a no-brainer. The key to getting the grade you want is preparation. Know the guidelines of your presentation. Who is your audience? Will it be your fellow students? If so, tailor you presentation to the age group or types of people you are speaking to. If you’re doing a science presentation to an audience of science students, then you do not have to explain simple theories. Go straight into the meat of your presentation. Also think about the details of your presentation. What is your time limit? Will the presentation be done in a class setting with no access to computer equipment or will it take place in an auditorium with state of the art gadgets. You must know the context in which you present your findings. Do your research. Spend time finding interesting articles or books on your topic. Take notes. Do not start outlining your presentation yet. Read through all your notes and let the ideas sink in. Once you’ve read the information, the ideas will start to form in your head. It may take a few days, but you’ll be happy that you stewed in the info first. Now it’s time to outline your presentation. Think about ways to present the information. You can do it in a formal, analytical way with heading and subheadings or you can try for a more chaotic idea presentation. Think about what will keep your audience interested. You don’t have to have a rigid outline just make sure that you’re ideas have coherence when strung together. Your presentation has to have a point. As long as your audience realizes the point at the end of your presentation, the ways you use to lead them to the point is all up to you. Decide if you will use a computer program such as PowerPoint or if you just want to talk at the podium. Utilizing technology can be a good way to keep your audience interested. Visual tools are always great aids in teaching. Take the time to learn the software if you plan to use a computer in your presentation. If you can’t find your way around a computer, don’t use one. You do not want to distract your audience and lose your train of thought by fumbling with foreign equipment. Always rehearse your presentation before the big day. Practice makes perfect. Stand up and read through your whole presentation in private. This will help you find any awkward sentences you want to change. Practicing will also make you less anxious when it’s time to present your information for real. Always have a good night’s sleep before presentation day. Eat a good breakfast or don’t if you’re the type to get very nervous. Stay calm and know that you’ve prepared well for the big day. There’s no reason for you not to ace your presentation if you’ve done your homework. Catherine Zandueta is a frequent contributor to CareersandEducation.com. Budget Travel - Eat Out without Busting Out on Vacation

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Adrienne Davis You can find good food to suit your travel budget as long as you are open to doing things slightly out of your normal routine. Also you often need to do a little research before diving into the first cafe or restaurant that you see. Drinks and snacks can be the biggest cost, and are not always available in smaller resorts. A travel kettle will pay for itself in no time - take sachets of coffee, tea and sugar and buy milk and biscuits locally. If you are in a budget hotel, guest house or hostel, breakfast may be included in your package. Make sure you check out the meals, do not be put off by other guests. Plain simple food is fine if it is served properly, a freshly baked roll with jam and coffee or tea will cost you nothing. That same meal in a cafe overlooking a piazza would cost up to half your daily food budget! Budget Travel breakfast could be in a local basic cafe - if it is full of hungry workers then you are likely to find a good value meal. And remember to eat what the locals eat. If you order an imported drink the cost could be three times the local equivalent. This is also a chance to meet people and get tips on the best place for lunch. If you are still ready to experiment at lunch, again look for cafes without a ‘tourist’ image. The basic budget travel rule when dining in a city is to avoid the restaurants overlooking a major attraction. Not only are these the most expensive, they charge extra for sitting on the terrace and the waiters can be very fierce in demanding tips. One street away you can stumble on a small cafe with the menu chalked up on a board, and local people eating there. It may offer just a few dishes but they are freshly cooked and good value. Or you can choose the easy option for budget eating and save time by using one of the international chains - or a local fast food outlet. Many cities offer takeaway pizza and bakes, sold by the piece or weight, teamed with a quick coffee or cola to prepare you for an afternoon of new experiences. Third option really applies if you have a vehicle - stock up with bread, cheese or cold meat and drinks, and stop at a beauty spot where you can dine al fresco. You should always buy plenty of bottled water when you see a supermarket - the cost difference buying water in small bottles can be more than five times the price! Making yourself known to other guests, the receptionist and locals, is another way to find the best way to eat within your travel budget. Most people are proud to share the best points of their city and will happily direct you to a favourite restaurant. When you want to enjoy a really top restaurant meal, the low cost option is to eat lunch. The best deals are on offer as most customers want to eat in the evening. The same rules apply when choosing the place. If there is a waiter outside to entice customers in, it is probably a tourist trap. If the menu is painted up permanently and offers 100 dishes, they come from the freezer. Usually the set menu or table d’hote is best for budget travel: this is sometimes served up till 8pm so look out for it. The chef puts the best food on the set menu and there is no shame in choosing it. The same rule applies to drink. House wine, often in a carafe, is the best value and they sell lots of it so it will be fresh. Local produce rules again - an imported spirit will be triple the cost of the local tipple, so why not try that instead? Finally, coffee in a smart restaurant is an expensive item. If you settle your bill, take a post prandial stroll and keep your eyes open you should find a friendly bar where you can get a drink, local color and usually music thrown in. You are on vacation, budget travel does not stop you enjoying it. Adrienne Davis runs Budget Travel Tips with help and tips for a great vacation to suit your budget. Antiques and Reproductions: Can You Tell the Difference?

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Martin Swinton Can you tell the difference between an antique and a reproduction? Does it really even matter? Theres nothing wrong with good quality reproductions. You just want to make sure that you know thats what you are getting. Here are some tips to help you tell them apart. Wood. Antiques tend to not be made using one type of wood. Why? It simply didnt make economic sense to use expensive wood such as mahogany in areas where no one would ever see it. Thats why the bottoms of drawers and joints of antiques might have lesser quality woods such as pine, maple. Reproductions tend to be made top-to-bottom from one wood and can be heavily stained to hide a poor quality wood. Check the underside, if the wood seems the same throughout the piece, it may be new. Upholstery stuffing. Up until late early 20th century, horsehair and hay were used to stuff upholstered furniture. Synthetics such as foam were introduced around 1920s. Keep in mind that the horsehair or hay may have been replaced in an antique during an earlier reupholstering. Its not necessarily bad, its just no longer in original condition. Signs of wear. Do the signs of wear make sense? An antique chair will show increased signs of wear at the end of the arms where the hands would naturally rest more so than underneath the arm. If the wear is consistent through the piece, its likely a reproduction that has been distressed to appear old. Signs of age. Look for signs of cracks caused by shrinkage. They indicate that the wood has expanded and contracted over time. This is normal for an antique. Antique marble. To find out if the marble is original to an antique, check the back of the piece. If the cut line at the back is jagged, the marble is likely original to the piece. In the 18th century, the tools to cut marble straight were not yet available. If the marble is smoothly cut, its likely post 18th century. Hand carving. Run your finger along the carving. Is it bumpy or smooth? Hand carving is uneven and asymmetrical. Machine carving is smooth and symmetrical. Dovetailing. Handmade 18th century dovetails are large and uneven. Machine-made dovetails are thin and even. Construction. Phillips screws, staples and fiberboard are all tip-offs to reproductions. On antiques with large surfaces (tables, trunks, armoires), furniture makers used wide boards with an uneven width. Reproductions use narrow boards with an even width. Gluing. On older pieces, cabinetmakers would reinforce glued joints with dowels, mortise and tenon etc. to ensure that they were good and sturdy. Poor quality reproductions will often only be glued which down the road will lead to them falling apart. Slip a piece of paper between the joints to see if it is reinforced. Hardware. Vintage hardware has patina. It doesnt have a lacquer finish to protect it from tarnishing and it isnt shiny and new looking. Rebuilt/refurbished/reproductions. Rebuilt furniture has some new elements added to it such as new shelves, backs on an armoire. Its common in a lot of French country furniture around today. Refurbished furniture has been restored. Either the wood has been refinished or the upholstery, caning, rushing replaced. Reproductions have no old aspects. They are completely new. Whether something is rebuilt, refurbished or a reproduction is not necessarily a negative, just as long as you are know that youre not buying an antique in original condition. Insert caning versus hand caning. Inset caning (post 1900) has a spine bordering the caning. Hand caning (pre-1900) doesnt have a border. Every now and then, hand-caned pieces were converted to inset caning when a hand-caner was not to be found. Check the underside of the piece to see if its been converted. The underside will reveal a series of holes that were used for the hand caning. Buying reproductions. Buying good quality reproductions eliminates the frustration of hunting for the right piece. Having something custom made ensures you get exactly what you want. For example, the narrow dimensions of antique armoires 15 to 17 inches dont suit todays electronic equipment. Some dealers, including myself, do offer custom reproductions to overcome this predicament. Buying antiques. The good news about antiques is they can be less expensive than reproductions because youre not paying for materials and labor costs at todays prices. Plus, each antique has a history. The patina, nicks and bangs on antiques reveal a full life of use just as the wrinkles on the face of an elderly person reveal a life that has been fully lived. The Art of War - Cleaning Your Home

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Enrique Cleanotto Unless you really like cleaning your home, you need a good strategy for getting it done with the minimum amount of fuss. This strategy can be called the Art of War, as applied to your house. The Art of War - Cleaning Your Home For most people, taking the time out to clean a home is not one of the more enjoyable tasks. It does not nearly as bad as preparing your taxes, but probably falls right in line with having to go to the grocery store to buy food. In other words, it is a task that has to be done, but as quickly and efficiently as possible so you can get on to other things in your life. The first step in developing a cleaning approach is to consider timing issues. Simply put, it is far easier and more efficient to clean on a regular basis versus trying to do the entire home all at once. If you set aside a couple hours every few weeks go through and do basic cleaning, you are going to find that everything goes a lot quicker and is much easier to get done. A good way to approach this, is to think about certain periods of the week when you have down time in your home. After breakfast on Sunday morning, most people just hang out and loaf for a few hours. Instead of loafing, you can plan on attacking one aspect of your home. The second step to making things go easier it is to first deal with clutter in your home. Your home may look more dirty than it is because there simply stuff laying around. If you go through the dirty clothes in the hamper, dishes in the dishwasher, and trash in the trash cans, infinitely cleaner than it did. Cleaning up the clutter should not replace actual cleaning of the home, but it’s a good first step. Once it is time to tackle the actual dirt in your home, preparation is the key. Ironically, you’re going to get dirty, while you’re cleaning. Given this fact, you should take off all jewelry and make sure you were close that can stand to get a little dirt on them. Next, try to put together an orderly cleaning procession. Are you going to start with bedrooms, the kitchen, the bathroom or what? You can start anywhere you wish, but it is generally best to start with higher portions of the room and work your way down. Once you get to the floor, make sure you clean towards the doors so you have some way of getting out. Everybody has a particular way they like to go about cleaning. One way that I prefer is to put on some music to take some of the boredom out of the process. You might give it a try. When it comes to the Art of cleaning, you can definitely take steps to make it less onerous. Try to do it in small steps, clean up the clutter and throw a little music on. Before you know it, you’ll be done with the cleaning up on to the rest of your day. Enrique Cleanotto is with CarpetCleaningYeti.com - carpet cleaning information and companies. Saving Energy in the Kitchen

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Dave Brummet The kitchen, with all its appliances, gadgets and heat, is a real hotspot for potential energy saving. As the oven uses the most energy and creates a vast amount of heat while cooking foods, it is a good place to start. For instance, when baking cookies use two trays. While one is in the oven baking, the other one is prepped with raw cookies ready to replace the tray in the oven with no wasted heat and some time saved. When we bake bread we also fill the oven with foil wrapped potatoes. The potatoes can be stored in the fridge without the foil and used throughout the week in a myriad of recipes, or as a side dish. This method can be applied to a menu plan in that if you are baking one dish, try to include a side dish that is baked as well. By turning off the oven a minute or two before the dish is done, the residual heat will finish the cooking. When done with the oven, open the door to allow any leftover heat to warm the home. Pasta cooking water can be left out until it has completely cooled so that the heat and moisture are released back into the air. Before pulling the plug, consider leaving hot dishwater (and bath water) until it cools. Why pay to heat up your sewer pipes? When cooking vegetables, consider steaming instead of boiling. When steamed, more nutrients are retained in the food, and because it requires less water to heat - there is less energy used. In summer, consider cooking on the barbecue to help keep the house cool. Most barbecues now include side burners that make outdoor cooking all that much easier. All these methods are relatively easy to adopt and when added up, the savings in energy and time really do make a difference. — Written by Dave and Lillian Brummet based on the concept of their new book Trash Talk. The book offers useful solutions for the individual to reduce waste and better manage resources. A guide for anyone concerned about his or her impact on the environment. Online Bachelor Degrees

Monday, February 18th, 2008

By Christian N Online bachelor degrees are quickly becoming the most popular means for students to further their educations. The Internet is simply exploding with schools offering online bachelor degrees in many different fields of study. Now, getting a degree can be simple and convenient with an online bachelor degree program. If you have ever considered a degree and want to start or continue an education, then perhaps an online bachelor degree program is for you. Careful investigation of the various schools and programs offered would help you choose the right school for your education and career goals. Not all schools and programs that offer online bachelor degree programs are the same, so before enrolling, students will need to fully understand all course expectations. The Internet is changing the way many industries do business and the Internet has altered the way many students receive their educations. Now, a student no longer must attend a university class on campus and students can attend class and receive online bachelor degrees right at home, on their computers. There are many different methods used in online bachelor degree programs, and the primary source for online bachelor degrees is, of course the computer. Students “e-learn” from online classrooms that have live chat, message boards, and often videos. Some courses will require using live videos for lectures and teaching in synchronous format. There are hundreds of schools that advertise online bachelor degrees and study programs. There are some online bachelor degrees that are awarded by accredited schools. Programs that have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education accredit most accredited schools. The course of study chosen, and the career field desired will help a student determine which school to choose, what courses to pursue, and how important an accreditation will be. Online bachelor degree fields are almost limitless. There are online bachelor degrees in health care, technology, business, education, and hospitality. Many more disciplines exist for online learning, so students should research and find a bachelor degree program that will accommodate their future careers. Education programs that offer an online bachelor degree are increasing, and perhaps because of the flexibility of theses programs. Students can easily access school studies and assignments online, from home. Students seeking an online bachelor degree can continue to work a full or part-time job if needed. Online learning also allows for students to raise a family, working on courses when it is most convenient. Studies are proving that online learning equips students for careers as well as the traditional classroom format has provided in the past. If you seriously want to further your education, browse the Internet today, and find an online degree program that will fit your education needs. Beware of Toxic Mulch

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Michael McGroarty Mulching beds has become extremely popular these days, and mulch can be really beneficial to your plants and the soil in your planting beds, but there are things you need to watch for. Here in Ohio the most popular type of mulch that people use is shredded hardwood bark mulch, which is a byproduct of the timber industry. When they haul the logs into the sawmill the first thing they do is debark them. Years ago the bark was a huge problem for the mills because there didn’t seem to be a useful purpose for it, until people realized the hidden benefits that it held. Still to this day, the bark is a headache for the saw mills, and they don’t always understand how to properly handle it. They like to pile it as high as they can so it takes up less space in their yard. The mulch really tends to back up during the winter months because there is little demand for it. In order for the mills to pile the mulch high, they literally have to drive the large front end loaders up onto the pile. Of course the weight of these large machines compacts the mulch in the pile, and this can become a huge problem for you or I if we happen to get some mulch that has been stacked too high, and compacted too tightly. When the trees are first debarked the mulch is fairly fresh, and needs to decompose before we dare use it around our plants. The decomposition process requires oxygen and air flow into the pile. When the mulch is compacted too tight, this air flow cannot take place, and as the mulch continues to decompose it becomes extremely hot as the organic matter ferments. Sometimes the extreme heat combined with the inability to release the heat can cause the pile to burst into flame through spontaneous combustion. In other cases the mulch heats up, cannot release the gas, and the mulch actually becomes toxic. When this occurs the mulch develops an overbearing odor that will take your breath away as you dig into the pile. When you spread this toxic mulch around your plants the gas it contains is released, and this gas can and will burn your plants. It has happened to me twice. Once at my own house, and once on a job I was doing for a customer. This toxic mulch is very potent. We spilled a little mulch in the foliage of a Dwarf Alberta Spruce that we were mulching around, and just a few minutes later brushed the mulch out of the plant. The next day my customer noticed that one side of the plant was all brown. The mulch had only been there for a matter of minutes. Not only did I have to replace the Dwarf Alberta Spruce, but the mulch also damaged at least 10 other plants that I had to replace. I once saw where somebody ordered a truck load of mulch, had it dumped in their driveway, and as the toxic mulch slid out of the dump truck onto the asphalt the toxic gas that was released settled on the lawn next to the driveway. The gas, not the mulch, turned the grass brown next to the mulch pile. This same person spread several yards of the mulch around their house before they realized the problem, and it ruined many of their plants. Now here’s the hard part; trying to explain to you how to identify toxic mulch. It has a very strong odor that will take your breath away. But then again almost all mulch has a powerful odor. This is very different than your typical mulch smell, but I can’t explain it any better than that. The mulch looks perfectly normal, maybe a little darker in color than usual. If you suspect a problem with the mulch you have, take a couple of shovels full, and place it around an inexpensive plant. Maybe just a couple of flowers. When doing this test use mulch from inside the mulch pile and not from the edges. The mulch on the edge of the pile has more than likely released most of the toxic gas that it may have held. If after 24 hours the test plants are okay, the mulch should be fine. The purpose of this article is not to induce panic at the mulch yard, but toxic mulch can do serious damage. At my house it burned the leaves right off some of the plants in my landscape, and burned the grass next to the bed all the way around the house. It looked like somebody had taken a torch and burned the grass back about 2 all the way around the bed. If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes I wouldn’t have believed it.
